A Shelter In Place Baker

I am by no means a professional baker or chef. However I am a baker out of necessity. During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, finding bread became impossible. This lead to people wanting to bake their own bread. As a result finding yeast became impossible. The culmination of the lack of bread and yeast led to Sourdough being apart of the 2020 cultural zeitgeist along with Tiger King and creative alternatives to toilet paper. I unlike everyone else didn’t see it as a fleeting fad. The seemingly Sisyphean task of cultivating wild yeast and baking bread successfully with it consumed me. Not only did I discover how deeply satisfying it would be to create delicious and beautiful bread from three basic ingredients, (flour, water, salt) but also a creative outlet, community, friendship, and resourcefulness.

Scooby My Sourdough Starter

This is Scooby, my sourdough starter. I created him on March 14th 2020. Scooby is used to leaven just about everything that I bake.
